AFFINITY CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Professional orchestra based in London, working in partnership with choirs, composers and event organisers. The orchestra looks to showcase it's musicians on every stage, bringing life to creative ideas and projects in all styles of music.
Established in 2021, The inaugural concert at Cadogan Hall with Goldsmiths Choral Union was a great success, performing the new work by Cecilia McDowall - 'Da Vinci Requiem', the rarely performed Haydn's 'Mass in Time of War' and Warlock's much loved 'Capriol Suite'. The Orchestra is experienced with much of the choral repertoire and has since performed sparkling interpretations of works by the great composers such as Haydn, Mozart, Faure & Durufle and on.
The Affinity Chamber Orchestra is a collection of amazing people - Immensely skilled and experienced musicians with a passion for delivering thrilling musical performances. Our musicians regularly perform with leading London and International Orchestras, seasoned chamber groups and as soloists, many of whom are highly respected specialist teachers of music in their field.
AFFINITY 415 is our early music ensemble, making it's debut appearance in March 2023 performing Bach's 'Magnificat' & Alec Roth's 'A Time To Dance' at Cadogan Hall. This wonderful baroque orchestra has since given many exciting performances of new and historical repertoire - from Handel's Coronation Anthems to the contemporary works of Caroline Shaw. This is a collection of world-class historically informed musicians.
The Affinity Chamber Orchestra is a collaborative group of musicians performing at the highest level with a wonderfully warm-hearted spirit.
As a performer, conductor, educator and musical director - I have spent a lifetime in music with a wide variety of groups in all styles of music from Baroque to Pop. Performing music with great musicians and friends being at the heart of my musical life - the inspiration for Affinity music.

Described by International Record Review as an “outstanding soloist”, Geoffrey Coates has pursued a distinctive and eclectic career as an oboist since he went on stage with Florilegium at the age of 19. His work has seen him collaborate with artists as diverse as Lea Salonga and Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and he is a featured artist on recordings of repertoire from Albinoni to Arvo Pärt.
One of the few oboists to be equally at home on modern and historical instruments, Coates has performed in all of London's concert halls with every major UK period instrument orchestra, and on tour in some two dozen countries. Recent orchestral work includes the BBC Proms with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, a new Glyndebourne Opera commission, a season as guest with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia and Cosi fan Tutte with Freiburg Baroque Orchestra.
Solo credits include two well-received recordings of oboe concertos, with Gramophone magazine praising Coates's "sympathetically affective reading" of Albinoni's D Minor concerto. He appears frequently as a soloist in London's St-Martin-in-the-Fields concert series, with engagements further afield including the Marcello concerto in Tel Aviv and concertos by Bach and Herschel at Dartington.
Coates won a scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama where his teachers included Neil Black, Richard Simpson and Gail Hennessy, and he was awarded an Erasmus Scholarship for study in the Netherlands with Frank de Bruine.
